Simple Headboard

This is a small room with a large king size bed, so instead of bringing in a large headboard that would fill the room up Room Service simply painted a blue headboard above the bed and added a shelf. A great idea for a small space.

A Chair to Rest

On a snowy day like today this pictures makes me feel much warmer. Found in Homes & Garden.

Think Low

We have a long wall in our family room which I had hung a large vertical picture on but the space still felt empty. After watching an episode of Room Service I got the idea of hanging a self below the picture as a floating table. Luckily I had a large 3’ shelf that I wasn’t using and it had a depth of 6” which was perfect for a few more frames and candles. The picture here is all that I could find from the episode, but the shelf can be partly seen on the far left side.

Pink with a Punch

What a great idea to have a very clean crisp room with one big punch of color...like PINK! It is then so easy to switch it out with another color to make the room change seasonally. Seen in Homes & Gardens Magazine.

By making a wall of photos to fill the farthest room gives immediate interest to draw the eye into that space. Seen in Homes & Gardens.

Picture This

A corner full of love and family. I wouldn't recommend it with kids but it makes an impact. I also liked the look of the mats that can be used to pin small items on to remember beautiful moments both are from Pottery Barn.

Stuff It!

Make a fun stopper for your next bottle of wine.

1. Find sealing corks in a size that will fit the bottle. Select a mirror rosette which comes in a variety of shapes, sizes, and finishes. (Corks and mirror rosettes can be found in most hardware stores.)

2. Using pliers, snip a length of wire to secure rosettes to the cork. Pictures here are 18-gauge copper wire and 16-gauge soft brass wire. Push one end of the wire into the cork, thread the wire through each rosette, and then curl the wire into the desired shape. Crimp the remaining end to eliminate sharp edges.
Found at Lowes.

Sears Home

Can't imagine ordering up a home from a catalog like we do a sweater from JCrew but back in the 30's that was available right alongside a bed! This home is just one of those but has been redone and brought into the modern age. From Cottage Living. This Sears Lakecrest home was delivered to Pennsylvania in 1931 in 30,000 pieces! Can't imagine the direction packet on that one.

The owner laid gray and white tiles diagonally in groups of four to make a large checkerboard pattern. The same gray tone is painted halfway up the walls to continue the look of the floor, and the rest is done in a high-gloss white in order to make the ceilings appear much grander. Read more on Cottage Living.

Pattern w/ Black

Here the idea was to choose a patterned and textured fabrics as well as a wallpaper in pale neutrals, then bring in accents of black. To brighten up the room, a large mirror was hung to reflect the light. Silk curtains add a touch of shine and give the room an elegance. From Homes & Gardens

Nate's Tips

Nate was on Oprah talking about what he places in every room that he designs to make it look like a home and not simply a showpiece. All rooms need to be welcoming and real, and it doesn't have to cost much money to do it.

1. Lighting is one of the easiest ways to modify any room. "Overhead lighting is harsh—it's horrible and it makes everyone look horrible," Nate says. "Find really cool lamps. It's very easy to do and it changes the entire feeling of the room." Check out places like Home Goods and TJ Maxx for some cheaper lamp options that still have great wow factor!

2. Consider putting objects on your wall that aren't necessarily art, as in this antique wooden sifter he found on the Internet. Look at garage sales or estate sales for great unique options!

3. Want a sophisticated look for not a lot of money? Try some coral or a starfish."This may surprise you, America, but I believe that every room should have a piece of sea life," Nate says. Again, check out Home Goods for these items OR on your next beach vacation take an early morning walk!

4. Nate says every room has to have one great odd chair. "And here's the tip—the chair does not have to match everything else in the room," Nate says. "The room will be much, much more interesting if it doesn't." Definitely look at estate sales for great old piece that might just need a new coat of paint and updated fabric!

5. Ever wonder what to do with all of the notes that you have hanging around your house from important people in your life? "Frame them," says Nate. "I have done it for years."One-page notes are the easiest to frame. Keep that in mind the next time you write someone a letter or thank you! FREE, FREE, FREE!

6. Take this decorating opportunity to learn more about yourself. "If there's a subject out there that you're interested in—photography, boating, whatever it is—books throughout the room are not only a great way to enhance the design of your room, but you might even learn something." Library sales or second hand book stores are filled with great books!

7. Nate says that overall, the most essential advice is to personalize your space. "And that means bringing things back from vacation, like these slippers that I brought back from Greece this summer," Nate says. "You might not think that you can put these in a bookcase, but when you do, your guests get to know something about you and about where you've been." Use things that you have in your house already that you wouldn't think of as design elements...like a pair of slippers...think outside the box here!

Yellow Rooms

It has been such a bright fall here! I love the sun and thought these colors were so happy for a day like today. Heads-up...my husband and I are moving this weekend and I will be without Internet for a few days! How can we survive!

This yellow paint color looks great with the dark furniture, black & white prints, & deep red bedding. The room features a Jean-Michel Frank designed chair from the 1930s. The wall paint is Acorn Spice (#A-H-280) from Behr. Seen on Point Click Home. Also from Point Click Home.
